Mr. Thompson's mom sent in this list along with the following information: "Attached is the paperwork for my sons platoon, they are headed back to Afghanistan again! The support they received last time was incredible.....
This time they are in the mountains of the Garmsir District, in Helmand Province. They will be strictly on foot patrols, at patrol outposts that are being built from the ground up. There are no chow halls, no showers, no laundry, no phone and Internet, just a sat phone that hopefully they will have access to from time to time. They will have no Humvee or tank backups, if they get "into it" then there only backup is going to be another foot patrol platoon coming from another outpost, As you can tell I am dreading this... you will see my reference below as to why.
My son called to tell me he was at leatherneck and to what patrol base he was headed to and what the conditions were. Sadly this time around I had hoped for better than last time but sounds just as rough if not worse and its summer time on top of it, heat and the poppy is harvested so now the Taliban has all its fighting $. Makes me sick to my stomach.
The marines loved the socks, they held up so well, that a few at the ceremony last Monday on their way out of town, (my son finally got his purple heart he earned last 2 April 2010) many of the marines were nervously killing time, talking about last time around. They lost 5, but how great the socks were, How they came just as they were running out. Some even have some that they got in the "Stan" near the end of the deployment, because they held up so well.
Thank you for your support of our troops. These marines are part of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Weapons Co, stationed in Hawaii."
